FROM FATHER STEVE
The Christmas Season continues with today’s celebration of the Epiphany. We know how the magi followed a star that led them to Christ (Mt. 2). In one of his Epiphany homilies, Pope John Paul II asked, “Who does not feel the need for a ‘star’ to guide them on their earthly journey?” In our search for Christ, we too, have need of a star. That might be a scripture reading, discernment in prayer, the wisdom of a family member, the counsel of a parishioner or friend. We can thank God for guiding us by such stars.
On behalf of our parish, I would like to welcome back the DePauw students who are returning for the January Winter term.
Joe Miles tells me that 265 people were served at the Christmas Dinner here December 25. That is a record number and doesn’t include the number of carry-out meals! This dinner is becoming a true ministry and community service. I want to thank the creators of this dinner—Joe and Rosie Miles, and Pam Guthrie—and the many volunteers who make this possible.
Many of you will remember parishioner Sam Ballou. He played the organ here part-time and is hoping to become a postulant member this month of the Missionaries of Charity Fathers. He sends his Christmas greetings and asks for our prayers. His community is in Tijuana, Mexico.
Enjoying those beautiful Christmas trees in our church? They were provided at great savings to us by parishioner John Zeller, operator of Snowy Pines Nursery.
Quote: “The loving providence of God determined that all nations should be saved in Christ. Let us celebrate with spiritual joy the day of our first harvesting, of the first calling of the Gentiles. This is the day Abraham saw. This is the day that David prophesied in the psalms. This day came to be fulfilled, as we know, from the time when the star beckoned the three wise men out of their distant country and led them to recognize and adore the King of heaven and earth. The obedience of the star calls us to imitate its humble service: to be servants, as best we can, of the grace that invites all people to find Christ” (St. Leo the Great).

Many, many thanks to all those who have contributed to the Putnamville Correctional Facility prison ministry program in 2007. We have been able to serve the Catholic community there with weekly Mass—since Father returned in August, a Bible Study and Communion service, bi-monthly Latino service, a Latino RCIA program, monthly Centering Prayer, bi-monthly counseling, Christmas, Easter and birthday cards, and a generous Christmas party. The men all send their thanks and gratitude for a wonderful year. Teresa Batto
