FROM FATHER STEVE
Today’s Feast of the Baptism of the Lord brings to a close the Christmas Season. Throughout this season we have celebrated the Mystery of the Incarnation of God. Jesus’ baptism—like his nativity and his appearance to the magi—is a visible manifestation of how God became human and acted. It says in today’s Gospel (Mt. 3) that at Jesus’ baptism “the Spirit of God descended like a dove and came upon him.” God pours out upon us the power of the Spirit, too. And the prophet Isaiah reminds us (Is. 42) that the power of the Spirit we are given is a power not to hurt or dominate others, but to heal, give hope, and set free. Do we live our baptism by being gentle, respectful, hopeful, caring?
It was one year ago this past Tuesday, January 8, that I was seriously injured in my auto accident five miles south of Greencastle on U.S. 231. While the months that followed were filled with a considerable amount of pain and frustration, I mainly look back at those many weeks as a time of grace for me and so many others, especially the parishioners here at St. Paul’s. How can I not be grateful for the many helpful acts of kindness shown to me? How can I not forget the countless get-well cards and words of support? So, thanks to all of you again!
On December 31st the oldest member of our parish, Stella Nauert, died. She had reached the grand age of 104 this past December. She had obviously witnessed a lot of history during her time, both human excellence and human foibles. Through it all, Stella maintained a steadfast faith and a strong love for the Lord. What a legacy she leaves us.
Our Legacy for Our Mission Capital Stewardship Campaign has now entered its follow up period. We are planning to invite a firm in the first half of this year to help us conduct a feasibility study and to develop a 10-15 year pastoral plan for our parish. As you know, Legacy for Our Mission is a three year campaign. If you were not able to make a pledge at this time, we will be most grateful for any contribution through the Fall of 2010.
Quote: “The greatness of man is to be able to have faith. To have faith is not to defy human reason but rather to share divine wisdom.”
