FROM FATHER STEVE
The countdown to the 2008 presidential election is in full swing. One thing is certain about all of the candidates. They are “self-appointed”—that is, they have put themselves forward for office. Discipleship—in contrast to candidacy for political office—is a “conferred” candidacy. Jesus alone is the one who calls. Jesus alone is the one who “votes” for us. And that is the most important vote of all. In today’s Gospel (Mt. 4) we are reminded that there are two things necessary to be (and remain) a disciple of Jesus. First, repentance (repentance means a radical reorientation of our lives). Second, keeping Christ at the center of our lives. That was true of those first disciples who were called—Peter, Andrew, James, and John. That must be a part of our discipleship, too.
I would like to welcome back those DePauw students who have been away during January for the winter term. It’s nice to have you back.
Next Sunday, February 3, we will be celebrating the Rite of Sending for our RCIA candidates during the 11:00 a.m. Mass. This will give our parish the opportunity to pray over those preparing for admission into the Church as we “send” them forward to Archbishop Daniel for the Rite of Election at the cathedral that afternoon.
Upcoming Collections. Please note that there will be three special collections as Lent commences: February 2/3, Propagation of the Faith; February 9/10, Black and Indian Missions; February 16/17, Support of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. In view of the financial constraints many of you are facing at the present time, your support of these collections is especially appreciated.
Scout Sunday is next Sunday, February 3. Scouts, and those involved with scouting, will carry out various liturgical ministries during the 11:00 a.m. Mass.
The firm of Sackrider & Company, Inc., Certified Public Accountants in Terre Haute, recently conducted an internal control assessment of the parish. Such assessments are carried out in all of the parishes according to Archdiocesan policy. My general observation about St. Paul’s accounting systems, financial reporting, and compliance with federal and state laws, is that we are in pretty good shape. The complete report is being provided to the Parish Pastoral Council and the Finance Council.
Quote: Always remember that there is a difference between light and heat. Most disagreements, unfortunately, descend to heat, to argumentative differences, when only light—only clarity, insight, and openness to the other—can really resolve the issue.
Father Steve
