FROM FATHER STEVE

This is the final Sunday of Ordinary Time before the beginning of Lent. In today’s Gospel (Mt. 5), Jesus proclaims the Beatitudes. He calls the poor, sorrowful, humble, hungry, and persecuted “blessed.” This does not make sense at first. However, all of these people are needy and therefore more open to God and his blessings. If you are full, satisfied, and self-sufficient—God doesn’t have much of a chance.

We will be celebrating the Rite of Sending for our RCIA candidates during the 11:00 a.m. Mass today. We will have the opportunity to pray over those preparing for admission into the Church as we “send” them forward to the cathedral for the Rite of Election this afternoon.

Lent begins this Ash Wednesday as you know. Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. Thanks to Mike Tzouanakis for preparing the ashes. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence (the regulations are printed elsewhere in today’s bulletin).

Today’s bulletin includes an insert regarding our Liturgies for Lent and Easter. You may wish to post this on your refrigerator for handy reference.

Special Collections. Please note that we will have three special collections as Lent commences: February 2/3, Propagation of the Faith; February 9/10, Black and Indian Missions; February 16/17, Support of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. In view of the financial constraints many of you are facing at the present time, your support of these collections is especially appreciated.

Scout Sunday is today, February 3. Scouts, and those involved as scout leaders and volunteers, will carry out various liturgical roles during the liturgy.

We have not received any additional news regarding the Archbishop’s health. We will pass this along as we receive it. Obviously, he is appreciative of our prayers.

Parishioner Chuck Schroeder was named 2007 Citizen of the Year at the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce annual meeting January 26. Chuck is the Director of Putnam County Comprehensive Services. He was cited for his community involvement (especially softball) and for being a champion for people with disabilities. Congratulations, Chuck!

Let us pray for one another that we may begin Lent—and keep Lent—well.

                                                                                    Father Steve

COMMUNION CALL MINISTRY - We need more folks to join the ministry of bringing communion to our shut-ins.  It is a very interesting and rewarding ministry.  I will meet with those interested and explain the process.  One of us will also take you with us so you can see what it entails and feel comfortable on your own.  Please call Pat Tobin at 765-386-6322.

*        Next week BLACK and INDIAN Sunday collection gives all of us the opportunity to reach out to the people of the world.  By our Baptism we take on the responsibility to be Christ’s witnesses and to share our faith with the world that has yet to hear the Good News of God’s love.   Please be as generous as possible.
