FROM FATHER STEVE
Part of our Lenten journey today on this Second Sunday of Lent takes us up the mountain of the Transfiguration (Mt. 17). It was on the mountain that Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John. It was also on that mountain that those first disciples were told to “listen to him [Jesus].” We, too, are called to “listen to him.” It’s hard to listen to him in an age of easy gratification. It’s hard to listen to him where so many other voices compete for our attention. It’s hard to listen to him in our society that is so noisy and busy. Lent hopefully gives us a special time/space/pace to listen to him. Our very salvation may depend on it.
This weekend we are being asked to support the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Our donations support seminaries, social service programs, youth ministry, pastoral centers, schools, church construction and renovation, and the spreading of the Gospel message through the mass media. Thanks for your generosity.
The First Scrutiny for our RCIA candidates will be celebrated during the 8:30 a.m. Mass next Sunday, February 24. The scrutinies are special prayers for their purification and strengthening as they prepare for the Easter sacraments.
We are hearing a lot about change during this presidential election year. Barack Obama is given credit for creating the notion of “change” as his campaign theme. Not only has this been picked up by his Democratic rival, but his Republican opponents as well. It will be interesting to see where all this political change will lead us. Change is also very much at the heart of the business of Lent. The change we are to be about is the most important change of all—a change of heart that will lead us to love God more deeply and to love our neighbors more generously. All of us—whether affluent, of average means, or poor—are called to this change. All of us are equal in our capacity to love with all our hearts.
Quote on Prayer (again). “Prayer is not an escape into spiritual narcissism. It is an attempt to put on the mind of God, to see the world as God sees the world, to respond to the needs around us as God responds to ours.”
Father Steve

The Christmas Store thanks you for our generous support in 2007. St. Paul will be collecting socks and underwear weekly. There is a basket in the Narthex. Seems there is never enough to go to everyone.
