FROM FATHER STEVE:
I was prepared for our major winter storm this past week. I stocked up on extra bread and milk, my medicine cabinet was full, and I had plenty of cookies. Yes, cookies! The cookie angel has evidently convinced all of those wonderful folks who have prepared meals for me that a meal would not be complete without a handful of cookies. Those handfuls have grown to…well, I could rival Keebler right now. I must admit, munching on cookies and milk was a nice pastime as I watched the snow fall.
When my doctors released me from th hospital, they encouraged me to remain active at home and to carry on my daily routines in as normal a way as possible. So, when a friend of mine invited to take me out to lunch last week, I was anxious to go. I evidently overexerted myself and paid the price that night. I was frustrated by this “set-back.” But someone suggested that this “set-back” was in reality a way to continue the healing process in an even stronger way.
The words “patient” and “patience” must de derived from the same root word. Being a patient for over two weeks in a hospital and now during my two-month recuperation has taught me a lot about patience. Everything takes more time—bathing, dressing, eating. We all need more patience, of course, especially patients! Patience is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It’s there for the asking.
I regret that I won’t be able to be with you on Ash Wednesday. Please know that I join you in faith, prayer, and love.
Father Steve
