FROM FATHER STEVE
The power of the Lord is revealed today on this Fifth Sunday of Lent in the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11). This last of the great Gospels for the instruction of the Elect is a reminder to all of us that Jesus—the “resurrection and the life”—has authority over life and death. In baptism each of us is given the hope of our own resurrection. But first we must look at the ways that we may be “living in the tomb”—through our sins, or by hiding our potential. Like Lazarus, we must listen to Jesus’ call to “come out” to risk living our faith to the full by living in the Spirit.
We invite your continual prayers for our RCIA candidates. We will be celebrating the Third Scrutiny with them this weekend during the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday.
Archbishop Daniel sends this update regarding his health. He had the third of six chemotherapy treatments on February 29. Radiation will follow after the chemotherapy has been completed. His prognosis for the future is positive. On the other hand, the side effects of his chemotherapy has been difficult—extreme fatigue, sometimes light-headedness, flu-like aches, and nausea. He is very grateful for and humbled by all the messages of concern and prayers. He thanks us for our continuing prayers.
Palm Sunday. The celebration of Palm Sunday is next weekend. Please note that the solemn procession with palms will be held during the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Please gather in the narthex for the opening rites.
While the attendance at our Taize Prayer last Sunday was light (OK, “intimate”), the prayer was quite beautiful and inspirational. I want to thank Jill Dombrowski for organizing the prayer as well as the musicians, cantors, and readers from the St. Paul, St. Andrew, and DePauw communities who led us.
On Happiness: “The key to happiness is the ability to love well. It is not how well things are going for us; it is about how well we are going. Happiness of this sort is then quite compatible with sadness and is possible even in the midst of enormous grief. We can always ask ourselves how we can love well no matter what our circumstances.”
