FROM FATHER STEVE

We enter Holy Week with today’s celebration of
Palm Sunday
(the 11:00 a.m. Mass will begin with the
solemn procession with palms). The liturgy today points
out the stark contrast in moods—the people who welcome

Jesus into the holy city of Jerusalem on this day waving
palms and singing their “hosannas”, are begging for his
blood by Good Friday! While we may be amazed at this,
the truth is that all of us can be fickle, all of us can change
our moods quickly. The scriptures today give us God’s
good news. Jesus loves those who not only love him.
Jesus loves those who are duplicitous, who betray him,
even hate him.

The schedule for the Sacred Triduum—Holy Thursday,
Good Friday, Easter—is printed elsewhere in this bulletin. I
encourage as many of you as possible to come to all of these
celebrations. In truth, the liturgies for these days are not so
much separate and distinct from one another, but rather
are linked together and form one continuous whole. The
most unique and solemn liturgy, of course, is the Easter
Vigil Service on Saturday evening. During this Mass,
we welcome our newest members of the Catholic faith.
Please come!

I will be at the cathedral on Tuesday evening participating
in the annual Chrism Mass (please note that the Tuesday 5:30 p.m.
Mass will not be held at St. Paul’s). During the Chrism Mass, the
priests of the archdiocese renew their commitment to service
and the oils used for the sacraments are blessed. Archbishop
Daniel would normally be the principal celebrant for this Mass,
but because of his illness, he has invited Archbishop Thomas
Kelly, OP, of Louisville to stand in for him.

Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. During
the Good Friday Service, a collection will be taken to support
the maintenance of the Christian shrines in the Holy Land.

Quote: “Jews and Muslims find the Christian claim
that Jesus is divine impossible. It seems blasphemous to claim
that divinity could be so intimately implicated in human flesh
and blood which, after all, is created and therefore radically
inferior to the creator. That the one the world waited for, the
reason for the world’s being, would die a shameful death,
says much about the evil into which the world has fallen.
It also says much about God’s way of confounding our e
xpectations. Christianity says that God is not what you
think he is, that divine power is not what you expect it to
be, that triumph is not all the world says it is.”

                Have a blessed Holy Week!

                      Father Steve
