FROM FATHER STEVE:

We celebrate the Second Scrutiny on this Fourth Sunday of Lent.  This weekend we are also invited to support the good work of Catholic Relief Services.  I hope you can participate.          I congratulate our 14 children who celebrated their First Reconciliation last Thursday and thank their parents and catechists who assisted in their preparation.  Thanks, also, to Fr. Joe Kern who led the service and the other priests who offered their ministry—Msgr. Larry Moran and Fathers Matthew Joy and Darvin Wintors.

Want to do something “extra” for Lent?  I encourage your participation in the weekday Communion Services and the Stations of the Cross/Soup Suppers held on Fridays.

I have good medical news to report.  I am beginning a month of “water therapy” to strengthen my right foot/leg and to increase coordination and balance.  That will be followed by 4-6 weeks of physical therapy.  I hope to be able to function at the liturgy by mid-May [?!].

While I try to do spiritual reading throughout the year, it takes on more intensity during Lent.  “Spiritual” books can be found in abundance in any bookstore today.  My niece gave me a copy of Rev. Rick Warren’s “The Purpose Driven Life.”  It is very much bible-based and Catholics will find nothing about sacraments and saints.  Nonetheless, there are some spiritual gems.  For example, Warren opens with:  “Life is not about us and our personal fulfillment, it’s about God.”  Whether Warren’s book becomes a spiritual classic remains to be seen.  However, there are many spiritual classics available and I encourage you to discover them.  One I have rediscovered is Brother Lawrence’s “The Practice of the Presence of God.”  This Carmelite offers several insights including, “Our only business in this life is to please God, and that anything besides that is foolishness and vanity.”

In honor of St Patrick, I close with this Celtic Blessing:  “Deep peace of the running water to you, deep peace of the flowing air to you, deep peace of the quiet earth to you, deep peace of the Son of Peace to you.”
