FROM FATHER STEVE
One of the most beloved images for Jesus is found in today’s Gospel (John 10) on this Fourth Sunday of Easter—Jesus the Good Shepherd. Like shepherds, Jesus calls us by name. He provides for our nourishment. He seeks out the lost and binds up our wounds. He is also the “gate”—gathering us into the fold and acting as a gate to protect us, secure our salvation. What a wonderful gift Christ is to us! In a sense we are shepherds and gates to our children, friends, other believers, fellow citizens. We are to offer authentic guidance to lead others to God. We are called to seek out the lost and to offer sanctuary where needed. Ultimately, like the Good Shepherd, we are called to lay down our lives in service of those God has entrusted to us. What type of shepherd and gate have you been?
Last fall we welcomed your commitment to our Legacy for Our Mission Campaign. You may recall that our immediate goal was to hire planning consultants to help us conduct a feasibility study and to create a 10-15 year pastoral plan for our parish. This may lead to modifications to our buildings which support our ministries and mission. I am happy to announce that a Pastoral Planning Team of parishioners has been formed to guide us through this process. I thank all of them for offering their time and talent for the good of our parish. I also welcome and encourage the input of all parishioners as we move forward in this important process.
I want to thank all of you who welcomed Benedictine Father Brendan Moss last weekend and have responded to his invitation to participate in the work of St. Meinrad Archabbey. Hopefully, you received a separate mailing from the archabbey this past week.
The priests of the archdiocese are being interviewed (I was interviewed April 4) regarding their priestly call and ministry, how their ministry has influenced their own spiritual growth, and how they might share their stories of vocation. A summary of these interviews will be presented at a Priestly Life and Vocation Summit June 9-11 at St. Meinrad Seminary.
Quote: “The Bible is the book for God-seekers. To really read it one cannot read it passively but, rather, must read it much as a musician reads a musical score, for the Bible is something to be performed, to be lived out.”
