FROM FATHER STEVE

The Holy Spirit “makes an appearance” on this Sixth Sunday of Easter. It’s our liturgy’s way of building up our anticipation for the Solemnity of Pentecost. In today’s first scripture reading (Acts 8) we hear how the Holy Spirit was given to the new church community in Samaria. In today’s Gospel (John 14) Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples. He identifies the Spirit as our Advocate. As such, he defends us and gives us courage. We can certainly use the help of this Advocate as we try to witness to Gospel values in today’s world. Ultimately, the Holy Spirit is the God-life energy within us that helps us to keep God’s commandments of love.

We are invited to contribute to the Catholic Home Missions Appeal this weekend. For 10 years now, Catholics from our more prosperous parishes across America have given generously to offer desperately needed help to the mission Church here at home. Thanks for supporting this!

The final session for the RCIA Class will be this Tuesday. We will gather for the 5:30 p.m. Mass, 6:00 p.m. dinner at Marvins, and class at 7:00 p.m.

Please note that the Solemnity of the Ascension will not be celebrated this Thursday, May 1 in the dioceses of Indiana and elsewhere. Rather, the feast has been transferred to Sunday, May 4.

I will be participating in the Senior’s Mass & Luncheon this Thursday at St. Ann’s in Terre Haute (I couldn’t participate last year because of my injuries). This gathering is a great opportunity to celebrate the faith of our senior Catholics and to thank them for their service to our parishes.

Please join me in praying for our young people who are preparing for First Communion and Confirmation. First Communion will be celebrated here May 11. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated May 18 in Terre Haute.

The sole topic for our April 15 Clergy Business Meeting was incorporation issues of the Archdiocese, Parishes, and Agencies. The Archdiocese hopes to move to incorporation by the end of this year.

Quote: “Those who have a sure hope, guaranteed by the Spirit, that they will rise again lay hold of what lies in the future as though it were already present. They say: Outward appearances will no longer be our standard in judging others. Our lives are all controlled by the Spirit now…  Since Christ has become the source of life for us, we who follow in his footsteps must not think of ourselves as living in the flesh any longer, but as having passed beyond it. In Christ one becomes a completely different person.” (St. Cyril of Alexandria).
