FROM FATHER STEVE
In today’s first reading (Acts 1) which records Jesus’ Ascension, the angels said to the disciples, “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?” This question implies that the disciples have a mission to accomplish. This theme is echoed in today’s Gospel (Mt. 28) commonly known as Jesus’ Great Commission. Their mission is to “make disciples of all the nations.” Today’s feast of the Ascension of the Lord is a good opportunity for us to look at “the Mission.” How much of our parish’s energy is devoted to mission and how much to maintenance? How seriously do we recognize that WE are now the hands, the voice, and the heart of Christ to continue his mission? In what ways have we (or can we) fulfill the mission of Jesus in the context of our family, work, and community?
A May Crowning ceremony, conducted by our children in pre-K-8 grade, will be held today in the church at 10:00 a.m. Come honor our Blessed Mother as we begin the month of May.
Today (May 4) DePauw students will gather for their final student Mass and supper for this academic year. Festivities start at 4:00 p.m. Please remember in prayer all of the students as they complete their finals and projects.
I also invite your prayers for our young people who are preparing for First Communion and Confirmation. First Communion will be celebrated here next Sunday, May 11 during the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Confirmation will be celebrated May 18 at St. Patrick’s in Terre Haute.
Many of you know that parishioners Bob and Joan Koenig lost their home recently due to a tragic fire. While shaken, they are in good spirits. They are presently sorting through the damage and will let us know in what ways St. Paul’s parishioners can help. Please keep them in your prayers.
The Indiana Primary Elections are this Tuesday, of course. Please exercise your privilege to vote. I encourage you to read the statement and/or bulletin insert prepared by the U.S. bishops regarding faithful citizenship and political responsibility. Copies are located by the St. Paul window.
The first meeting of our Pastoral Planning Team will be held this Wednesday, May 7, at 7:00 p.m. Once again I wish to thank those who are serving on the Team and look forward to working with them.
Quote: “Only those who live beyond themselves ever become fully themselves.”
