FROM FATHER STEVE
We conclude the Easter Season with today’s Solemnity of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit has always been a master of surprises. Who would have thought that a fairly uneducated group of disciples from the backroads of Galilee would end up in Jerusalem speaking to peoples from several nations in their own languages (Acts 2)? Who would have thought that that fearful group of disciples would become so courageous (John 20)? Pentecost is not just a past event but celebrates what is happening in our lives right now by the power of the Holy Spirit. Has our life caught on fire by the power of the Holy Spirit? Has fear gone out our door? How have we used the gifts of the Spirit to build bridges of compassion and forgiveness, to renew the face of the earth?
Today, May 11, is First Communion Sunday. I offer my congratulations to our first communicants who will share in this special sacrament during the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Thanks also to you parents who have shared your faith with your children and have brought them to the eucharistic table.
Today is also Mother’s Day. We will be praying for our mothers (whether living or deceased) during today’s Masses. Not only have they given us life but, hopefully, love—and have shown us the ways of faith. Thank you!
Please note that there will be no Mass this coming Tuesday evening. I will be attending a St. Meinrad Alumni dinner in Indianapolis.
Please remember in prayer all students who are completing their finals and projects as well as our confirmation candidates. Confirmation will be celebrated next Sunday (May 18) at St. Patrick’s in Terre Haute.
Thanks to all of you who sent birthday greetings on my 61st birthday. I am especially grateful for the hand-crafted cards created by the students in our 7-8 grade religious education class. I also appreciate your prayers.
I am currently meeting with our Finance Council as we prepare our parish budget for the new fiscal year beginning July 1. The Pastoral Council will discuss the proposed budget June 5.
Quote: “Without the Holy Spirit: God is far away, Christ stays in the past, the Gospel is a dead letter; But in the Holy Spirit: God is not far away, the risen Christ is here, and the Gospel is the power of life.”
Father Steve
