FROM FATHER STEVE:

Last weekend you heard the announcement that I will be returning July 3 to serve St. Paul Parish (with its attendant chaplaincies) on a full time basis.  I will no longer serve as pastor of Annunciation Parish in Brazil.  While I am grateful that I am relieved of the 5-Masses-a-weekend schedule and given more time for my body to recuperate from the injuries suffered in my auto accident, I have mixed feelings about leaving the good folks I’ve met in Brazil.  Father Dominic Chukwudi has been appointed administrator of Annunciation parish, as well as Holy Rosary parish in Seelyville (administrator is the name given to a first-time pastor).  I will continue my connection to Annunciation parish for the immediate future, however, the archbishop has asked me to mentor Father Dominic for at least a year.

Congratulations to all of you who are graduating this year!  Allow me to quote some advice from Cardinal Theodore McCarrick:  “Among all the words of congratulations that my classmates and I received in the numerous graduations of our lives, we were often told to have confidence in ourselves, to make a difference, to change the world and to be successful.  That is always good advice, I guess, but as I look back at it, it usually left out something very important.  I wish we had been told that we must learn to work with other people and to have confidence in them as well.”  And newsman Tim Russert says that the best commencement speech he ever heard was all of 16 words:  “No exercise is better for the human heart than reaching down to lift up another person.”  Amen

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord.  Jesus has completed his earthly task and now “moves on” to his heavenly home.  Many priests have just received the news that they must move to a new assignment.  Their work may be complete or unfinished.  In any event, let us pray for those priests and parishioners facing transitions at this time.
