FROM FATHER STEVE:

This solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ was paced in our liturgical calendar during the Middle Ages—a time when people adored the real presence in the monstrance but few partook of Holy communion.  Today, thankfully, we can do both.  Pope Benedict XVI has devoted a section of his apostolic exhortation “The Sacrament of Charity” to the relationship between the Eucharist and the Church.  He helps us realize that without the Church, there is no Eucharist, and without the Eucharist there is no Church.  Archbishop Daniel recently said, “The Eucharist and our participation in it is not a ‘take it or leave it’ matter.”  The second Vatican Council described the Eucharist as the “source and summit of the Christian life.”  St. Thomas Aquinas described the Eucharist as the “precious and wonderful banquet, that brings us salvation and contains all sweetness!  Could anything be of more intrinsic value?”  I don’t think so.  Let’s spread the good news about this wonderful and consoling gift from God!

Once again I want to thank Fr. Bernie LaMontagne (who teaches at St. Mary of the Woods College) who is presiding at our Masses this weekend.  Thanks, Father Bernie!  I’m looking forward to finally being able to celebrate Mass with you next weekend.  June 8th marks the fifth month since my car accident.

On the weekend of June 23/24, Fr. Tom Lindner will be here to speak on behalf of Hands Together.  Hands Together is a Catholic lay mission program founded to serve the very poor in Haiti.  I know you will give a warm welcome to Father Tom.  He comes at the invitation of the Archdiocesan Mission Office.

Many of you remember parishioner Sam Ballou who served as organist at many of our Masses.  He has been living with the Missionaries of Charity Fathers in Tijuana, Mexico, learning about their life and apostolate.  Recently, Sam wrote to me and sends greetings to you.  He continues to play the keyboard at Masses there and is teaching catechism to the children.  And his Spanish is improving.  Sam is keeping us in his prayers and he requests our prayerful support.

We are presently forming our Leadership Team for our capital campaign this fall.  Please keep this in your prayers.

Quote:  “I learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one.”
