FROM FATHER STEVE:

I know you join me in welcoming Fr. Tom Lindner to our parish this weekend.  He will be speaking on behalf of Hands Together – a Catholic lay mission program in Haiti.

It was so good to see so many of you at the Masses last weekend!  Today (Sunday), I will be in Terre Haute to join Fr. Joe Kern for his golden jubilee celebration.  We are especially blessed to have him in our deanery.  Father Joe will be returning to St. Paul’s next weekend and I will be at Annunciation Parish for my final Masses.

Today we celebrate the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.  John has played a pivotal role in salvation history.  The scriptures describe him as a prophet and a light to the nations.  John once said that “Jesus must increase, I must decrease.”  He is always recognizing his subordinate status to Jesus.  We Christians are also called to be a prophet, and to take a subordinate and servant status that the light of Christ might shine forth in our world.

The annual Peter’s Pence Collection, in support of the charitable works of the Holy Father, will be taken next weekend.  Those suffering from war, oppression, disease and natural disasters will be assisted.

I want to congratulate Mark Harlan and Lori Lewis who are the newest members of our Pastoral Council.  We did not have a full slate of nominees this year to conduct a general election.

Last November, the U. S. Department of Agriculture decided that Americans who go without food are no longer hungry – instead, they posses “very low food security.”  In these days of terrorism, it seems that everything is being described in terms of “security.”  Jesus was satisfied with the old description, I was hungry, and you gave me food.”  And that’s just fine with me.

CALL TO ACTION

The issue of immigration reform is controversial, the US Bishops’ teaching is clear:  We stand in solidarity with you, our migrant brothers and sisters, and we will continue to advocate on your behalf for just and fair migration policies. (Strangers No Longer, 106)

Now is the critical moment for that message to be heard.  The US Senate debate on reform of our immigration laws is beginning.  The national leadership of the Justice for Immigrants campaign urges Catholics to a week of prayer and call-ins.

1.  Pray for a reform of our immigration system that will provide a just and legal solution to all our brothers and sister immigrants.

2.  Call our two US senators, urging them to work for a just, comprehensive reform bill that keeps sacred the reunification of families.
