FROM FATHER STEVE:

This coming Wednesday I will be officially stepping down as pastor of Annunciation Parish in Brazil.  It will be good to be returning to St. Paul’s on a full-time basis.  Please note that we will beginning a new weekend Mass schedule August 18/19.  We are continuing to provide communion services on Thursday and Fridays during July while I continue to gain fuller strength.  My hope is to inaugurate a weekday Mass schedule by August.

The annual Peter’s Pence collection, in support of the works of the Holy Father, will be taken up this weekend.  Those suffering from war, oppression, disease and natural disasters will be assisted.

In the tributes given to Father Joe Kern last Sunday on the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, many folks referred to his humility, his love and care for people…and his holiness (we nearly canonized him, ha!).  I wonder how many people present were comfortable with that world “holiness” with reference to another Christian?  Am I comfortable with that notion?  Yet, that is our central call as members of the Body of Christ.  Father Joe has shown us its way.

As we celebrate our freedom this Independence Day, let’s not forget that too many in our own country are still not free from their poverty.  Our work as a nation must continue.

I will be in Cincinnati July 2-5 with two of my priest friends.  It’s our first chance to vacation together since my accident.

Someone once said:  “You shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mit on both hands.  You need to be able to throw something back.”  Amen!

CALL TO ACTION

The issue of immigration reform is controversial, the US Bishops’ teaching is clear:  We stand in solidarity with you, our migrant brothers and sisters, and we will continue to advocate on your behalf for just and fair migration policies. (Strangers No Longer, 106)

Now is the critical moment for that message to be heard.  The US Senate debate on reform of our immigration laws is beginning.  The national leadership of the Justice for Immigrants campaign urges Catholics to a week of prayer and call-ins.

1.  Pray for a reform of our immigration system that will provide a just and legal solution to all our brothers and sister immigrants.

2.  Call our two US senators, urging them to work for a just, comprehensive reform bill that keeps sacred the reunification of families.
