FROM FATHER STEVE:
On this14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we return to the topic of discipleship. In today’s gospel (Lk. 10), Jesus sends forth 72 disciples to further his mission. He commands them to carry “no traveling bag.” In other words, they were to travel lightly and to depend on God to take care of their needs. What are we taking with us as we carry out Jesus’ mission today? What’s in our traveling bag? How much do we trust that God will take care of our needs?
Fr. Michael Oseme of the Diocese of Issele-UKU, Nigeria, will be here next weekend (July 7/8) to preach a mission appeal. His visit has been arranged through the Mission office of the Archdiocese. I know you will give him a warm welcome.
The cover story for the July issue of Indianapolis Monthly magazine is entitled “It’s Easy to Go Green.” Well, I’m not certain that it’s always easy to “Go Green,” but I made a decision recently to help protect our planet. I bought a hybrid car (my last car was totaled in my January 8th accident). In November, 2005, the bishops of the United States published an excellent document call “Climate Change: Our Responsibility to Sustain God’s Earth.” Protecting our environment is ultimately a moral issue. All of us do not necessarily have to purchase hybrid cars. But, there are 100’s of smaller ways that we can make a difference.
I have been reading Stephen Prothero’s book entitled “Religious Literacy.” It begins with a paradox that the author has been wrestling with for some time: “Americans are both deeply religious and profoundly ignorant about religion. There are Protestants who can’t name the four Gospels, Catholics who can’t name the seven sacraments and Jews who can’t name the five books of Moses…. One of the most religious countries on earth is also a nation of religious illiterates.” One of the best features of the book is its extensive dictionary of religious terms. Check it out!
Quote: “Believing in God isn’t the hard part; waiting on God is.”
