FROM FATHER STEVE:
In the first reading we are commanded to love God with our whole heart (Deut. 30). Jesus now connects this teaching and bonds it with love of neighbor (Lk. 10). But then the question is raised, “Who is my neighbor?” The answer is, “everyone”. In today’s world, we are interconnected with others in every conceivable way: political, social, economic, and religious. We are one human family. Yet battles over illegal aliens or global warming would more that suggest that we choose to go our separate ways, that we are not all neighbors. How can we be more neighborly?
Fr. Ben Okonkwo of the Diocese of Issele-Uku, Nigeria, is visiting us this weekend to preach a mission appeal. His visit has been arranged through the Mission Office of the Archdiocese. I know you will give him a warm welcome.
Some folks have asked about when will we be resuming our weekdays Mass schedule. My hope is that we can begin the week of July 29. The schedule will be: Tuesday, 5:30 pm; Wednesday, 8:30 am; Thursday, 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:30 am.
On the medical news front: I have officially completed my Out Patient physical therapy sessions. Of course, I will be continuing with “at home” exercises. I experience some pain and swelling in my right foot almost each. Bur, overall, I’m very much on the mend. Thanks for your prayers.
The priest monk Thomas Merton had this to say about prayer: “It is a matter of common belief among Catholics that when God promises to answer our prayers, He does not promise to give us exactly what we ask for. But we can always be certain that if he does not give us that, it is because He has something much better to give us instead. That is what is meant by Christ’s promise that we receive all that we ask in His Name.”
As you read this, my hope is to be in Lima, Ohio visiting my brother and his family. I will be returning to Greencastle this Friday. .
Father Steve
