THERE ARE A FEW OF YOU …VOLUNTEER MINISTERS who have not sent in your sign up sheet for the NEW MASS times that will start on August 18/19. We now have a computer program that schedules volunteers…it (Betty) needs to know what times you prefer. We had to publish the new schedule this week due to the expiration time factor. You make the Mass a wonderful worship time. Thank you |

FROM FATHER STEVE:
Today is the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In today’s first reading (Gn. 18), Abraham bargains with God and asks him time and again to spare the people of Sodom. Jesus invites us to persist in prayer as well, to “ask, seek, knock” (Lk. 11). We are called to be pray-ers and intercessors—to intercede for our nation and our world, to intercede for the good of our families and every family, to intercede for the sick. How confident is our prayer before God? How bold?
This past July 4th I had the opportunity to visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati (what better day to visit a freedom museum than on Independence Day!). As many of you know, the Ohio River once marked the border between slave and free states. The museum tells the history of slavery in America and the risks people took to free slaves (known as the “Underground Railroad”). Interactive exhibits challenge visitors to look at the issue of freedom in today’s world and how they might “free” people from today’s various “oppressions.” I found this museum most inspiring and well worth a visit.
Please note that our new Weekday Mass Schedule will begin this Tuesday (the full schedule is listed in the right column on this page). I want to thank all of those communion ministers who conducted communion services in my absence. And in the future, they are willing to conduct a communion service when a Mass cannot be celebrated. So thanks again!
Domino’s Pizza Founder Thomas Monaghan has been in the news again lately for his attempt to build a “Catholic town” named Ave Maria in southwestern Florida. One critic has said: “Jesus never counseled his followers to hole up behind gilded gates and wait for his return; he did say a lot about going out into the world and announcing God’s reign. And there was something about leaven and salt, both of which imply getting mixed in with other stuff, other people. By and large we Christians have lived in the world while trying not to be too ‘of’ it. So there’s really no need to segregate ourselves from anyone else.”
Quote: “Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.” This is the season of hope. Let us sustain each other in hope, especially during these turbulent times.
Father Steve
