FROM FATHER STEVE
In today’s Gospel (Lk. 12), Jesus tells his disciples to be prepared for his coming. “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return,” he says. The need for readiness was underscored earlier this month by the tragic bridge collapse in Minneapolis. We hope and pray that all the departed were prepared to meet and welcome their God. We can take solace that so many people have been prepared to respond so quickly and lovingly to the grieving and hurting families. What things can we do this coming week to be better prepared for the Lord—not only for his final coming but his daily comings?
The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary is this Wednesday, August 15th. This is a holyday of obligation (and opportunity!). Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m.
Also, this Wednesday I will be returning to my prison ministry at the Putnamville Correctional Facility. I am looking forward to celebrating Mass again with the inmates and providing counsel and catechesis. I want to thank Teresa Batto not only for filling in for me during my absence, but also for coordinating the scheduling for visiting priests. This was in addition to her regular visits to the prison each week!
The first meeting of the Pastoral Council for the “new” year was held on August 2nd. Jim Mannon was chosen as the new chairman. Richard Burkett will serve as secretary once again. The position of vice-chair is presently open. Special thanks to Matt Welker who served as chairman this past year.
Don’t forget that the new Weekend Mass Schedule will begin next weekend, August 18-19.
Ouch! The air conditioning went out this week in a good portion of the office wing. It is now repaired…at the tune of $4,200. Thought you would like to know.
Quote: “Growth in faith as trust casts out anxiety. Who of us would not want a life of less anxiety? If you were not anxious, could you imagine how free we would be? How well we would be able to love? Faith as radical trust has great transforming power.”
