FROM FATHER STEVE
In today’s Gospel (Luke 12) on this 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus is preparing his followers to travel the lonely road of the prophet. He told them, “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” We know that when one’s faith is “really on fire” it can cause division in families—even parish families! The decision to follow Christ—especially in a prophetic way—can meet harsh rejection. Faith does not always bring peace and tranquility. Sometimes it brings rejection, opposition, loneliness, and division. Have we experienced rejection or criticism because of our witness to Christ? If not, why not?
At this time of year new students are arriving at, and former students are returning to, the DePauw campus. On behalf of St. Paul’s parishioners I would like to welcome all DePauw students! We hope they find at St. Paul’s their spiritual home away from home. This coming Friday evening, Paulette Davis and I will be attending the Student Activities Fair on campus. At that time we will get to meet the students and introduce them to our campus ministry.
The sessions for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults will begin soon. Please let Paulette Davis know if you are aware of someone who would like to explore the possibility of becoming a Catholic or to learn more about the Catholic faith.
Why belong to a church? Here’s one reason N.T. Wright offers: “The church exists to encourage one another, to build one another up in faith, to pray with and for one another, to learn from one another and teach one another, and to set one another examples to follow, challenges to take up, and urgent tasks to perform.” I was thinking, how do we measure up to that description?
Ever since St. Mother Theodore Guerin was canonized, the archbishop has been going to each of the deaneries to offer Mass and to celebrate her life. Parishes in the Terre Haute Deanery will have that chance on Wednesday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. St. Joseph University Parish will be the site for the Mass. This was where Mother Theodore first worshipped when she came to Indiana. We hope many of you can join in the celebration.
I encourage the women of our parish to participate in a women’s retreat on September 15 entitled Living Mindfully: Slow down and hear God breathing in you. An insert is included in today’s bulletin.
Church painting. The exterior of our church (window trim and doors) received a long-overdo fresh coat of paint this past week. Thought you would like to know.
