FROM FATHER STEVE

If you have engaged a radical Christian fundamentalist in a discussion, you will usually get around to the question of who can be saved. In today’s Gospel (Luke 13) on this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, someone asks Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” Jesus did not answer the question (he wasn’t one to speculate about such things). Instead, he says, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate.” That “narrow gate” includes the discipline, challenges, hard decisions, and trials whereby we do the will of God on earth. That must be our focus. In the end, whether we’re saved or not is God’s business. When you think about it, salvation is already God’s gift to us!

During the Masses this weekend, a Blessing for Students and Teachers will be conducted. We ask that they be guided by God’s wisdom to develop their gifts for the glory of God and the service of humanity.

On behalf of the Pastoral Council, I want to thank Jim Mannon for hosting the Council Picnic last Sunday afternoon. We got to enjoy his historic cabin and the beautiful forest preserve (not to mention the good food and company!).

Our Capital Campaign Legacy for Our Mission will be conducted this Fall. Brian and Linda Gilmartin are chairpersons for the campaign. Last Tuesday, I met with them and our consultant, Michael Shumway, to begin planning for this important effort in the life of our parish. Presently, Brian and Linda are contacting potential leaders to assist with the work of the campaign. The idea is to involve as many parishioners as possible with smaller tasks so that no one person becomes overwhelmed. I want to thank those of you have already said “yes” in taking a leadership role. A Leadership Training Enlistment Meeting will be held this Thursday, August 30.

Fattening Faith? “According to Purdue University sociologist Ken Ferraro, one’s religion can be an indicator of one’s propensity to obesity. Tracking 2,500 people over eight years, Ferraro found that Baptists suffered the highest rates of obesity (perhaps because alcohol and tobacco use is discouraged, so members turn to food. Here are some other obesity rates: fundamentalist Protestant (including Pentecostal) (22%); Catholic (17%); Reformation-Era Protestant (9%); Nondenominational Protestant (5%); Mormon and Christian Scientist (3%); Jewish (1%); and other non-Christian (0.7%).” Hey, since Catholics are only at 17%, we might as well head to Marvin’s!
