FROM FATHER STEVE

The image of the banquet is the focus in today’s Gospel (Luke 14) on this 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. Jesus instructs his disciples where they should be seated at a banquet and whom they should invite should they host a banquet. The banquet, of course, is a metaphor for our “table of life.” In the first case, we should take the “lowest place”; in the second case, we should invite “the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.” By taking the lowest place, we are saying that we want to make a place for the needs of others before our own. By inviting the poor to our banquet, we are recognizing their equality with us. In fact, they are presented as a blessing to us! This is a challenging teaching. How often do we seek to be “first in line”? How easy is it to not notice the poor, and when we do to be critical of them?

Our Capital Campaign Legacy for our Mission will be conducted this Fall. I want to thank all of those who have already said “yes” in taking a leadership role. The next Training Session for Leaders will be held this Wednesday evening, September 5. See bulletin for specific times.

On September 9, our archbishop, Daniel Buechlein, will observe his 15th anniversary as Archbishop of Indianapolis. He celebrated 20 years as a bishop in March. If you wish, you might want to drop him a congratulatory note.

Don’t forget that our Deanery Celebration honoring St. Mother Theodore Guerin is coming soon—September 12. Mass will be held at St. Joseph University Parish in Terre Haute beginning at 7:00 p.m. I hope many parishioners from St. Paul’s will be able to attend.

Medical News. I have officially completed my medical treatment! My final appointment with Dr. Tim Weber was last Monday. I will continue to do those exercises, however.

On Holiness. “When the Catechism of the Catholic Church considers the call to holiness, it cites Matt. 5:48: ‘Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.’ The Greek teleios means the goal towards which one is moving. Thus one translation that might render this more clearly is: ‘Be perfected as your heavenly Father is perfect.’ This translation points to a process. Understanding holiness as a process frees us from complacency or any sense that we have arrived. The Christian vocation is a call to be always in the process of being perfected or made holy in Christ.”

Do have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.

CHRISTMAS STORE served 2,867 individuals December, 2006.  It takes a lot of hard work and effort year round to provide items needed for the store.  Every man, women and child should receive 2 pairs of socks and underwear.  Most of the time this does NOT happen.  With your help we can make a difference.  There is a basket in the narthex year round for this project.  We thank you for all that you do!

May God continue to bless this ministry.
