FROM FATHER STEVE

In today’s Gospel (Luke 14) on this 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus tells two parables—one about a builder and the other about a king planning battle—to help his disciples to look at the cost of discipleship. That cost means “taking up our cross” each day. It may even entail the giving of our very lives! Many missionaries and prophets have been martyred for the faith. “Martyrdom” for us most likely entails that daily witness to Christ despite the inconvenience it brings us or the snide remarks of others. What does our discipleship presently demand of us? Is it too easy? Or has it cost us something?

Our religious education classes are beginning today. I want to thank all of our catechists who are providing this wonderful and important ministry to our young people.

I also want to thank you parents who take the religious education of your children seriously. Next Sunday (Catechetical Sunday) we will have the Blessing of Catechists during the 11:00 a.m. Mass.

The first DePauw Student Mass & Dinner for the new school year will be held today—Mass at 4:00 p.m., dinner at 5:15 p.m. Students of all faiths are welcome. Please spread the word.

This Wednesday, September 12, Archbishop Daniel will be in our Terre Haute Deanery for the special Mass honoring St. Mother Theodore Guerin. The Mass will be held at St. Joseph University Parish in Terre Haute and will begin at 7:00 p.m. Each parish in the deanery has been invited to provide special participants for the liturgy. Of course, everyone is invited to the Mass and I hope many parishioners from St. Paul’s will be able to attend.

Two organizational and training sessions have been held already for our Capital Campaign Legacy for Our Mission. I’m gratified by the several parishioners who have indicated their willingness to assist with the several leadership roles. Brian and Linda Gilmartin are the overall Campaign Leaders. They have already done a superb job!

On Worship: “Participation in worship is vital for Christian formation. We join in praise of God. Such praise not only draws us out of ourselves, but is also profoundly subversive—it affirms that God alone is the source of all blessing, that God is Lord and the lords of this world are not.”

CHRISTMAS STORE served 2,867 individuals December, 2006.  It takes a lot of hard work and effort year round to provide items needed for the store.  Every man, women and child should receive 2 pairs of socks and underwear.  Most of the time this does NOT happen.  With your help we can make a difference.  There is a basket in the narthex year round for this project.  We thank you for all that you do!

May God continue to bless this ministry.
