NURSERY VOLUNTEERS-  09/23/07

What is the vocation of a Christian?  The answer is demanding, but clear:  The vocation of a Christian is holiness.  It is a vocation that has its roots in baptism and is proposed anew by the other sacraments, and principally by the Eucharist.                             Pope John Paul II

FROM FATHER STEVE

Today is Catechetical Sunday. This year’s theme “Catechesis: Encountering the Living Christ” recognizes the role catechists play in introducing people to Christ and the Church. Catechesis allows people the opportunity to experience the life of Christ in a deeper way in the midst of the faith community. This year we have 16 catechists (as well as DePauw students) serving in our catechetical ministry. We are most grateful for their ministry. A Blessing of Catechists will be held during our 11:00 a.m. Mass.

Fr. Joe Kern will be concelebrating the 11:00 a.m. Mass today. He is here to join us in our annual Parish Picnic this afternoon. The festivities will be held from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m., with the pitch-in dinner/hog roast beginning at 4:00 p.m. Y’all come!

Would you apply the word “extreme” when it comes to God? Today’s scripture readings for this 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time speak of a God who is “extreme”—especially in the ways he shows mercy. In today’s Gospel (Lk. 15), we have three parables of extreme forgiveness—the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. In each parable, God goes to outlandish extremes to reach out to the lost and to celebrate their “being found again.” Is it possible for us to share in a greater blessing?

Legacy for Our Mission. Our Capital Stewardship Campaign continues. A special newsletter was sent to parishioners last week providing an introduction and overview of the campaign. Once again I want to thank all of those serving on our Leadership Team. I also want to encourage all parishioners to say “yes” if they are asked to volunteer to help.

Many hands make for less work.

The introductory session for this year’s RCIA was held last Tuesday evening. To date we have 7 persons enrolled. If you know of someone who might have been thinking about the possibility of becoming a Catholic, please let us know!

This Thursday evening I will be in Terre Haute to attend a Catholic Charities fundraiser. Eight folks from St. Paul’s will be joining in this special celebration. Please note that a Communion Service will be held in lieu of Mass.

Don’t forget that we will be holding a life chain for Putnam County on Respect Life Sunday, October 7. I hope many parishioners will be able to participate.

Quote: “’I’ll tell you exactly why I’m here,’ the young woman told the inquisitive initiation director at St. Paul’s Parish. ‘When I was young, faith was just not a priority. My family never belonged to a parish. After college I met Grace. As our friendship grew, I realized there was something—or someone—Grace had found that I was missing. One night she invited me to a Bible study at St. Paul’s. One thing led to another…I guess you could say it was through Grace that I first encountered Christ.’” The mystery still happens.

                                                                                Father Steve

The Knight of Columbus would like to extend their appreciation to all who inquired about our organization.  Several parishioners completed membership applications last Sunday and many more expressed a desire to join and will submit applications.

For those wishing to transfer from another council, please fill out a membership application and check the box marked “Transfer”.  You will need the number of the last council to which you belonged.

For those members of the previous council at St. Paul’s who wish to become active again, please fill out a membership application and check the box marked “Reactivation”.  If you no longer wish to be an active member, we will need a letter from you indicating this.  Please include your membership number if available and place the letter in the box at the back of church.

Due to the positive response to our membership drive, a 1st Degree initiation is scheduled for September 30, 2007, at 2:30 p.m.  For those that have not yet submitted an application, we need them as soon as possible.  Please fill one out and place it in our box at the back of church.
