FROM FATHER STEVE
On this 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear two healing stories that teach us about the importance of being grateful. The first story is about the healing of Naaman the Syrian (2 Kings 5). The second is about the healing of ten lepers (Luke 17). You may remember that only one of the lepers—a Samaritan at that!—came back to thank Jesus. We may wonder why the other nine did not do so. “Thank you” may be the two hardest words to learn, yet the two most important words to use. What are you thankful for? Who needs to hear your “thank you” this week?
A Day of Prayer for One Another is being held today, October 14 as a part of our Legacy for Our Mission Capital Stewardship Campaign. The archbishop’s Legacy for Our Mission Prayer and a Prayer Guide is included in the bulletin this weekend. Someone will be praying for you by name today. Will you pray for someone, too? As we pray for each other, we want to thank God for our parish and her ministries and outreach. We also pray that God bless our Campaign and help us to be generous in our own commitment.
This Tuesday (during the day) I will be attending the Fall Clergy Business Meeting that will be held at St. Agnes parish in Nashville. What a terrible time to have to go to Brown County (Ha).
On Thursday of this week, the Terre Haute Deanery Council of Catholic Women will be holding their meeting and celebrating Mass at St. Paul’s. We give them a warm welcome.
World Mission Sunday is next Sunday, October 21. Once again we have the opportunity to reach out in faith to more than two-thirds of the world’s people who have yet to hear of Jesus Christ. Won’t you recommit to our Church’s evangelizing mission? The missionary work of the Church depends on each one of us.
Don’t cover up that gray! This quote comes from Reporter John Allen: “There’s a common lament in Catholic circles, and it has to do with the ‘gray heads’ that show up for church events. A room full of older Catholics is universally understood to be a bad thing, whereas a room full of young people would, presumably, be interpreted as a godsend. There is a common assumption that youth equals growth, while old age equals decline. Yet given the demographic situation in which the world today finds itself, in many ways the exact opposite is the case. In the United States, the current total of 35 million Americans who are 65 or older will more than double by 2030. The graying of the population actually represents a potential ‘boon cycle’ for the churches if they know how to react. None of this means, of course, that Catholicism ought to abandon the young.”
For those of you on Fall Break: Do have an enjoyable one!
Father Steve
