FROM FATHER STEVE
On this 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time we begin our period of reflection and inspiration regarding stewardship. If you had asked me 15 years ago about stewardship, I would have told you “It’s all about the money.” Since then I’ve learned that stewardship is an attitude and a way of life. Stewardship asks us to let go of the fear of not having enough and to trust in God’s care of us. During the past weeks I have been thinking about my own pledge and what it would mean to me to give sacrificially. Today’s Gospel (Lk. 18), about the Pharisee and the tax collector, reminds us about the danger of making comparisons. Each of us is invited to make a gift based on God’s gifts to us, not on how our gift compares to another. Gifts of all shapes and sizes are needed and valued.
I hope each parish household has received the Information Packet for our Legacy for Our Mission Capital Stewardship Campaign. The Advance Commitment Gatherings will be held this Monday (1 gathering at 7:00 p.m. at the parish) and Tuesday (10:00 a.m. at the Pride’s, and 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the parish). Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament will be held this Thursday from 8:00-9:00 p.m. Prayers for the success of our campaign will be included that evening. Our youth are presently learning about stewardship through the “Youth Bible Study Lesson.” We are also approaching certain parishioners to consider making “pacesetter” gifts to the campaign. Over 90 parishioners are volunteering to help promote the campaign. By all means, please continue your prayers that we may seek to do the Lord’s will for our parish and the archdiocese.
The Solemnity of All Saints, a holyday of obligation, is this Thursday, November 1st. Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. Please join us.
Alice White, Coordinator of the Putnam County Food Pantry recently wrote me: “The Pantry wants to thank you and your parishioners for the continued and unfailing support you give the Pantry. The volunteers look forward to your generous donation. You helped us through a difficult summer when the number of people needing help increased great. And the need continues. A sincere ‘Thank You.’”
Here’s a quote pertinent to All Saints Day: “It is essential that all would-be saints understand that no one grows holy out of the riches of oneself. We are all empty-handed beggars in need of Heaven’s alms. Holiness is dependent on dispensed grace. All that we have and all that we are is a gift from our creator. There is nothing any of us beggars can bring before God our creator except our empty, tattered, treasured selves.”

There will be a memorial service Wednesday, November 7 at 7 p.m. here at St. Paul’s. It is open to everyone who wishes to remember and honor someone they loved who has died. This could have happened in the recent past or a long time ago. There will be a simple ritual including a candle lighting and naming ceremony. It does not include a mass. Refreshments will be served in the Narthex following the ceremony.
