FROM FATHER STEVE
Today we bring our church year to a close with the Solemnity of Christ the King. In today’s gospel (Luke 23) we are presented with a “shocking” image of our king—one who is being crucified and reviled by the bystanders. In the context of this gospel, we are challenged to serve a crucified king. Are we ready to imitate his sacrifice? What sacrifices are we willing to make to make our society more just and equitable? What sacrifices are we willing to make to protect life and our very planet?
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development will be taken this weekend, November 24-25. This campaign was created by the U.S. bishops to help people find permanent solutions to the problem of poverty. Real, sustainable change is happening because of the support of parishioners across the country.
I want to thank all of you for attending one of the Special Events for our Legacy for Our Mission Capital Stewardship Campaign. It was great to enjoy fellowship together—not to mention the great food! My hat goes off to Stacey Plamondon, Mary Rissler, Margie Secrest, and all the “chefs” and volunteers. Great job.
I’m grateful to all of you who have returned your commitment cards to date. We will be receiving these cards through Celebration Weekend, December 8-9. As you know, we have a challenging goal--$425,000—and the involvement of each parish household is needed. Remember: It’s not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice. Even if you cannot make a commitment at this time, please sign your card and return it. Please continue to keep the campaign in your prayers.
The Retirement Fund for Religious collection will be taken up on the weekend of December 8-9. This has been the most successful collection in U.S. Catholic Church history. More than 37,000 religious are now past the age of 70. More than 5,000 require skilled nursing care. Their social security benefits are only one-third of the average U.S. beneficiary. So the need is there.
Quote: “The world is not as our culture would have it; true power resides not in wealth or influence or armies, but in trust in the paradoxical ways of a vulnerable, dying God on a cross who then rises as ‘the beginning, the firstborn from the dead.’”

Imagine life below the poverty line, where one in eight Americans struggles every day. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development helps people to create permanent solutions to the problem of poverty in their communities. Be part of the numbers that care; give generously to the CCHD Appeal next weekend. Visit www.povertyusa.org.
