FROM FATHER STEVE
During this season of Advent we are invited to listen to the voice of the prophets. On this Second Sunday of Advent we hear the voice of two—Isaiah and John the Baptist. Isaiah envisions a peaceable age when the “lion will lie down with the lamb” (Is. 11). How peaceable are our relationships with others right now? What steps can we take to bring about more peace? The Baptist calls us to “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mt. 3). Repentance here means much more than being sorry for one’s sins—it means a conversion and change of mentality so as to welcome Jesus. What changes do we need to make in “our mentality” in order to welcome Jesus more?
Our Advent Penance Service will be held this Wednesday, December 12, at 7:00 p.m. Please take advantage of this opportunity to repent. It is also a chance to make peace with God and others. In addition to myself, Fathers Joe Kern, Rick Ginther, and Dom Chukwudi will be assisting with the sacrament.
The Retirement Fund for Religious collection is being taken this weekend. Many of the religious do not have full social security benefits. More than 5,000 require special nursing care. Thanks for your support.
We have now received pledges amounting to $287,000 for our Legacy for Our Mission Capital Stewardship Campaign. This represents commitments from 150 parish households. I am most grateful for these gifts. In order to reach our $425,000 goal, we will need everyone’s help. Thank you for your prayerful support of our campaign.
The Crisis Pregnancy Center of Putnam County has approached the churches to conduct the No Crib for a Bed collection this month. St. Paul’s has slated the collection for next weekend, December 15-16. The collection assists the Center in its important work of reaching out to at-risk mothers and their children (see bulletin insert).
I want to thank Bernie Batto who is the new parish contact person for the Indiana Catholic Action Network (see insert in today’s bulletin). I encourage parishioners to be engaged with its work. The network has been set up by the bishops of the state.
Let us continue to pray for one another during this joyful season of expectation. In particular, I invite your prayers for all the students taking exams and finishing their projects and papers this week.
