FROM FATHER STEVE
Merry Christmas to all of you! I especially want to welcome our parishioners and visitors to our Christmas Masses. I also want to thank all of those who are decorating the church and providing music and ministries for our celebrations.
Today’s scripture readings on this Fourth Sunday of Advent talk about two men called upon to make a choice—King Ahaz of Judah (Is. 7) and Joseph, the son of David (Mt. 1). The king made a bad choice which contributed to the eventual destruction of Jerusalem and the Babylonian exile. Whereas Joseph’s choice—to accept Mary as his wife despite the many questions surrounding her pregnancy—led to the birth of our Savior. Our choices, too, have an impact on ourselves and others. The choice to seek God’s will—as Mary and Joseph did—must be paramount in our lives, too.
As you know, we have now received pledges exceeding the $300,000 mark for our Legacy for Our Mission Capital Stewardship Campaign. I am most grateful for these gifts. I also want to make one last “plea” to those of you who might still be able to help us reach our $425,000 goal. To those of you who cannot make a pledge at this time—but if your situation changes—I will certainly welcome a gift at a future date. I want to thank Brian and Linda Gilmartin (chairpersons), the members of the Leadership Team, and the many volunteers who assisted with our Campaign. We will continue to provide campaign updates in the bulletin throughout the new year and keep you informed about what your sacrifices will affect here at St. Paul’s.
Christmas Quote: “Today our Savior is born; let us rejoice. Sadness should have no place on the birthday of life. No one is shut out from this joy; all share the same reason for rejoicing. Let the saint rejoice, let the sinner be glad. In the fullness of time, the Son of God took for himself our common humanity in order to reconcile it with its creator. At the birth of our Lord the angels sing in joy: Glory to God in the highest, and they proclaim peace to his people on earth. When the angels on high are so exultant at this marvelous work of God’s goodness, what joy should it not bring to the lowly hearts of humans?” (St. Leo the Great, pope).
I will be leaving Christmas day to go to Lima, Ohio to spend a few days with my brother and his family. May the peace of the Prince of Peace dwell in all your homes!
Father Steve
