FROM FATHER STEVE
We continue our observance of the Christmas Season today with the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Family. Some have questioned how the Holy Family can serve as a model for families of today—where life is quick-paced, highly pressured, and time together difficult to find. We should recall that the Bible does not propose the Holy Family to us as a sociological model, rather as a model of faith. And in terms of faith, it’s hard to find a better model. In short, the Holy Family teaches us to remain open and faithful and obedient to God, regardless of life’s circumstances.
The Feast of Mary, the Mother of God is this Tuesday, New Year’s Day. This is a holyday of obligation. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. The Church has always venerated Mary as the Mother of God. Why not come and honor that faithful woman who became the bearer of the author of all life?
This coming Friday I have been invited to “answer some questions” during a winter-term class at DePauw. The class is entitled “Ritual, Community, and Religious Life in Central Indiana” and will be taught by Russ Arnold. The class will come to the 11:00 a.m. Mass at St. Paul’s next Sunday, January 6.
Holy Family Quote: “Nazareth is a kind of school where we may begin to discover what Christ’s life was like and even to understand his Gospel. How wonderful to be close to Mary, learning again the lesson of the true meaning of life, learning again God’s truths. We learn from the silence of Nazareth. If only we could once again appreciate its great value. The silence of Nazareth should teach us how to meditate in peace and quiet, to reflect on the deeply spiritual, and to be open to the voice of God’s inner wisdom and counsel. We also learn about family life at Nazareth. May it show us the family’s holy and enduring character—a community of love and sharing, beautiful for the problems it poses and the rewards it brings. Finally, in Nazareth, the home of a craftsman’s son, we learn about work and the discipline it entails, demanding yet redeeming” (Pope Paul VI).
I want to that all of you who sent me Christmas greetings and gifts. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and support. Have a Blessed New Year!
Father Steve
